Last week Blow The Scene was introduced to Philadelphia-based artist and musician Matt Ferri. Ferri's artwork can be seen in many local flyers and designs for several underground East Coast bands including website graphics, shirts, stickers, and album covers. His distinctive works have been drawing more and more attention from the underground community as he continues a prolific flow of artistic output. Ferri also plays bass and delivers vox in Philadelphia's own thrash-metal quartet, Trasher. The band is embarking on a three-week, full-US tour that kicks off today. Check out what ...

Blow the Scene Editor Joshua T. Cohen caught up with VOETSEK on the opening night of their Full US Tour, running June 29 through July 25. You're getting it straight from the tour van in this exclusive interview with Ben, Ami, Scotty, and Athena!
Imagine a group a ruckus, uber-talented, eclectic punk rockers playing speed-metal songs at breakneck pace. Mix in a healthy blend of socially poignant lyrics with a barrage of riot anthems and one can begin to get a sense of Northern Cali's VOETSEK. They're punk, they're thrash.. they're fucking awesome. A frenetic four-piece outfit with equal representation in the XY and XX chromosome department ("Four balls, Four ...
In a current landscape of rampant unemployment in the wake of a global economic melt-down, the BP oil spill marking the worst environmental disaster in U.S. history, the re-ignition of widespread racial discrimination, and the Afghan war officially being declared the longest war in U.S. history, the future for mankind can seem bleak, at best. With such daunting, large-scale problems, and with the powers that be, blinded by greed, steering the world into economic, social and ecological collapse, it’s enough to make one feel helpless to make any change that can realistically shift the direction of ...

Adam Rauf, Staff Writer
All images by Seth Ballentine, Blow The Scene Staff Photographer
The Melvins are an amazing band that really defies words sometimes. They’ve had an extensive history of playing music, being an influence on countless bands, and yet are some of the most honest and straightforward folks in the music business. Buzz Osbourne and Dale Crover have seen it all, and always make great interviewees. They’re funny, they’re quirky, and they write some of the best ...

The Tapes Your Mother Laid Out for You
Second Installment: Rush - Grace Under Pressure (1984)
By Andrew W. Miller
By 1984, progressive rock was far from the genre du jour. It had seen its heyday in the 60s and 70s and had subsequently been bested by the catchiness (sorry, Johnny Rotten) and simplicity of punk and new wave. Ten years had gone by since Rush's first album, Rush (1974), had been released. The latter nine years saw eight full-length albums produced by Terry Brown, who had seen the band develop from straight-up Led Zeppelin worship to the powerhouse that recorded epic, movement-structured albums like 1976's 2112, 1978's Hemispheres, as well as the commercially-successful Moving Pictures (1981) featuring the ...

In this installment of Old Soul, I am going to share with you some rare live footage of the female-fronted funk group, The Brides of Funkenstein. In a nutshell, The Brides of Funkenstein were a female-fronted Parliament Funkadelic, and in my book, it doesn't get much better than that.
As with most of the P-Funk spin-off groups, the muscians backing the Brides were the same musicians that played in Parliament Funkadelic. Many different members of ...

The Tapes Your Mother Laid Out for You
First Installment: Depeche Mode – People Are People (1984)
By Andrew W. Miller
The Depeche Mode that most are familiar with is a British New Wave act, popular for breakthrough hits like "Personal Jesus." In fact, the group released six proper albums prior to Violator and had hits with songs like "People are People." However, many of these early albums were only available in Europe and Australia. It was only after the release of "People are People," originally released on Some Great Reward, that a North American audience was introduced to ...

I'm Always Right (sided): Third Edition - Product Placement
by Joe Baker (Pittsburgh Based Tattoo and Visual Artist of Independent Ink)
You’re only as good as the company you keep. Surround yourself with books and you’ll most likely do well in school. Surround yourself with whores and you’ll most likely get herpes. The “company” you keep could be friends, movies, music, hang out spots, etc. So if you hang out under a bridge with a bunch of junkies there’s a good chance your company ain’t that good. Many people can feed off the energy of their surroundings that’s why the saying “product of their environment” rings true. Creating ...

This week I'm taking you back to see The Isley Brothers live. Their musical career spanned over generations of Isleys and musical trends, but whether they were helping people make babies with some of the smoothest, most sensual r&b and soul that has ever graced the earth, or greasing up the dance floor with some rock infused funk, they did it with a touch and style that only they could.
The Isley Brothers, originally from Cincinnati, Ohio, were encouraged by their parents, who were themselves musicians, to pursue music from a young age, and with their air-tight musicianship, it shows. The ...

Hi Ryan! Tell us a little about yourself.
I'm a self-taught, Louisville Kentucky based editorial photographer and a bit of a "Good-Time" Charlie. I collect Pez and Mr. Potato Heads. I actually have a whole room dedicated to my toy collection! I have a huge Rat Fink tattoo on my arm. Oh yeah, and I like to shoot people!
What is your favorite style of photography?
I would have to say classic pinup is my favorite genre of photography. Concert Photography is a close second. Explain what makes you an expert in the “Lifestyle Portrait” compared to other photojournalists. I have a studio, but shooting portraits of kids and families ...

Mike Sniper is the man behind Blank Dogs. I met up with Mike before a home turf performance at “weird night”(May 12,2010) in New York City and he told me all about what is going on in the scene today and why and how he is able to produce so much music. Sniper is a true musician with a vision in a world of copycats and kids that just want to be in bands.
Jane: So, you are playing NY Eye and Ear Fest. Are you excited with the New York scene right now? It’s pretty cool that there can be ...

Talent is a gift that is useless unless it is nurtured and molded onto something great. It is like a child, it’s a beautiful creature that needs love, guidance, and support to reach those vital developmental stages of life. Talent is no different; it takes discipline, determination, and passion to create art and develop your true artistic style regardless of the area of expertise. If you are blessed with any talent at all, you'd be a fool to waste it.
The only way to ensure that your talent isn’t’ decaying away in a dark corner is to take it upon ...

This week I want to take you back to some live performances of a female powerhouse vocalist who toured with the James Brown Revue throughout the late 60s and early 70s. James Brown was quoted as saying she was the best singer he ever had in his band, and possibly the best singer he had ever witnessed. She is the widow of the late Bobby Byrd who was James Brown’s right-hand man and is credited with igniting James Brown’s career by taking his talent beyond the walls of the Georgia youth detention facility where Byrd and Brown met. But most importantly, she had a voice whose fire and feeling rivaled ...
