Hibernating bats in the northeastern United States are dying at an alarming pace due to the onset of White-nose Syndrome. Named for the white fungus evident on the muzzles and wings of the affected, this fungus thrives in cave temperatures. Apart from the physical ailments, afflicted bats awake early out of hibernation in an attempt to cleanse themselves of the fungus. This early awakening inadvertently leads to death from freezing temperatures as these animals attempt to find food to replenish their stored winter fats. White-nose Syndrome has already killed ...

Wikipedia, along with several other major websites shutdown today in what many believe to be the largest online protest in history to combat proposed anti-piracy bills that could amount to censorship currently pending before the full Senate.
Instead of the normal Wiki search-bar that millions of visitors have come accustomed to using every single day, visitors to Wikipedia found a single stark message.
A poignant title in bold white letters on a sullen black background reads, "Imagine a World Without Free Knowledge."
"For over a decade, we have spent millions of hours building the ...

Last month we started to notice bands Comadre and Daytrader taking part in live, interactive, web shows on a new site called Yowie.com. We zipped over to check things out and hooked up with Erica Shultz of the Yowie team. Erica recently sat down with Blow The Scene Editor Joshua Cohen for the skinny on what's cooking at Yowie.com!
Joshua BTS: Greetings! Thank you for taking the time to answer a few questions for Blow The Scene readers around the world! Let’s begin by having you introduce yourself, and tell, what is Yowie?
Hi BTS readers! My name is ...

At the beginning of the 20th century, the American Pit Bull Terrier was the most popular family dog in the United States. Pit bulls became the symbol of the American War Hero during World War I & II and were used in great capacity as guide and therapy dogs. Pit bulls exemplified the most desirable qualities of Americans and our "never quit" attitude. Pit bulls have been accredited with saving scores of human lives, as well as, dogs and other animals in various rescue missions. Photo by Larry West.
So about a week ago, Blow The Scene contributor and graphic artist, Larry West roles into the office with some pictures he took at Ozzfest, August 22 in Camden, NJ. And to be honest, until Larry zipped in with his photo stack, I didn't even know Ozzfest was still around. But sure enough Ozzy is still baby-steppin across stages all over the states, and for this year's final show date, he brought a special guest.
I took a look through Larry's stack of ...

When is a controversy not really a controversy?
I’ve never been one to shy away from something that could, and has, offended people. In a lot of ways, it’s what I do best. As not only an American but an adult, I expect to be offended whenever possible. Why? The only way to grow, the only way to become a better person is to be challenged. Being offended forces us to ask questions that we may not be comfortable with, and the intelligent among us will begin to wonder if we’re being offended for the right reasons or not, and ...

Last week Rage Against The Machine announced they will be playing the Hollywood Palladium Friday as a benefit show with all proceeds going to Arizona organizations fighting the pending Arizona law SB 1070. This Friday's concert is the only scheduled North American appearance by the band and is the first time Rage Against The Machine have played Los Angeles in 10 years. Needless to say, the show sold out in minutes and singer/front-man Zach De La Rocha expects the event to raise over ...

If there’s only one lesson I’ve learned from Harvey Pekar, it was that anyone can make a comic book.
For an artist like myself, who has a hard time getting it together long enough to just draw up one stinkin’ page of my own comic book..well..this is profound.
Pekar also reminded us that everyone, no matter his or her place in the world, has one hell of a story to tell.
Harvey Pekar was born in Cleveland, Ohio in 1939. Growing up wasn’t easy. He had to deal with the usual challenges and tribulations of lower-income neighborhoods with everything from joblessness to violent gangs. These challenges also came from within Pekar’s own spirit. He would continually try ...

These days its rare to find a band that has created more of an aura of confusion and rumor than the punk/power-violence, super-group, United Nations. Every aspect of this band is clouded in myth and mystery. The only confirmed member is Geoff Rickly, the vocalist/lyricist of the band Thursday. Why? Well it may have something to do with the fact that all other rumored members are under contracts with record labels that prevent them from playing in other bands. These rumored members include; Daryl Palumbo, vocalist of Glassjaw and Head Automatica, Ben Koller, drummer for Converge, Jonah Bayer, guitarist of Lovekill, and Eric Cooper, bassist of Made Out of Babies. Live interpretations ...

Review: The Big 4 Movie: Metallica, Megadeth, Slayer, and Anthrax on the Big Screen!
By Larry West
I was a teenager again.
In 2002, I was an oddity in my high school. I, unlike 99% of the other students, listened to metal. Not only that, but I was still just getting into the genre. By the time I graduated, I had gone from listing to Winger’s Seventeen, to listening to Slayer’s Reign in Blood. That was truly a magical time, and I had one simple vision of all these guys just getting together and playing at each others' shows. This was already occuring to some regard; Anthrax let Metallica share its ...

All images by Seth Ballentine, Blow The Scene Staff Photographer
The Melvins are an amazing band that really defies words sometimes. They’ve had an extensive history of playing music, being an influence on countless bands, and yet are some of the most honest and straightforward folks in the music business. Buzz Osbourne and Dale Crover have seen it all, and always make great interviewees. They’re funny, they’re quirky, and they write some of the best ...

One of our all-time favorites, legendary crust punk outfit Drop Dead have announced they will be performing at this year's Foo Fest in their home turf of Providence, Rhode Island (we'll get to the rest Foo Fest's amazing line-up in just a moment). Drop Dead have been very selective about which live dates they pick up over the past few years and their August 14, Foo Fest performance is their only scheduled date this year! Formed in the early 1990, Drop Dead have etched a name for themselves as a defining band in the American crust punk movement. Adhering firmly to ...

In an interview with Exclaim!, Strike Anywhere discuss their departure from Fat Wreck Chords to Bridge Nine Records.
"It’s always reassuring to know that Richmond, VA’s Strike Anywhere are out there, playing their punk rock, defying the system, generally doing the same thing they’ve been doing for four albums and 11 years. Vocalist Thomas Barnett realizes the band play a very specific type of music, but feels they opened it up on their latest album, Iron Front, which they will be touring across Canada in support of as part of a North American tour.
“We know we play a genre, but we love it,” Barnett tells Exclaim! in a recent interview. “It’s what ...

What a rough week for metal. We're still recovering from the death of metal legend Ronnie James Dio and only a few days afterward, post-everything metal prophets Isis, announced their breakup.
“This end isn't something that occurred over night and it hasn't been brought about by a single cataclysmic fracture in the band,” reads Isis's blog. “Simply put, ISIS has done everything we wanted to do, said everything we wanted to say. In the interest of preserving the love we have of this band, for each other, for the music made and for all the people who have continually supported us, it is time ...
