Philly House Shows XIV: Like Rats

Monday, February 10th, 2014
Like Rats Philly House Shows XIV brings us back to West Philly's Golden Tea House for a gnarly bill featuring Chicago's Like Rats, and local crushers in Grower and Dying. Like Rats (featuring members of powerviolence enthusiasts Weekend Nachos) bring a mid-paced blend of Celtic Frost-style riffs and raw punk energy to the table that proved to be a perfect fit for this gathering of West Philly's finest. Like Rats continues to support their latest on A389 Recordings, a 9-song, self-titled, full length that ToxicBreed'sFunHouse described stating, "[Like Rats] manages to maintain it's raw nature while still ...

Coke Bust has been on a tear for the better part of 2013 with tours throughout the US and Europe as they continue to support a new LP, Confined, on Grave Mistake Records. This blistering 9-songer was recorded with Kevin Bernsten at Developing Nations Studios and can be sampled and purchased ...

Philly House Shows XII – Golden Tea House

Saturday, October 19th, 2013
ILSA band Philly House Shows pt XII takes us to West Philly's Golden Tea House for a recent performance with Richmond's psychedelic metal unit Windhand, DC doom punks ILSA, and Philly's own powerviolence duo Backslider. Windhand's Relapse Records debut LP Soma hit streets worldwide in September and has been noted for a dual guitar attack compared to such pioneers as Black Sabbath and Nirvana. Windhand play what has been described as a tinnitus inducing mix of eerie psychedelia and haunting ambient doom. Prior to this most recent effort, 2012 saw the release of Windhand's self-titled, debut LP via Forcefield Records and ...

Philly House Shows XI – The Mitten House

Monday, July 22nd, 2013
war-emblem-band-4 Philly House Shows XI brings us to one of our favorite Philly show houses, The Mitten House for a rad hardcore punk billing. Located in West Philly’s 50th and Kingsessing Ave. neighborhood, this niche house is home to some punk rock veterans and has hosted some great shows over the last several years. A huge, well-managed basement with the support of like-minded housemates allows for band merch spreads in the living and dining rooms, all complemented by a sweet side garden area and back porch for cool-off in between sets- You really can’t ask for much more from a show house. Top this off off with mellow vibes and rad ...

Philly House Shows X

Monday, May 20th, 2013
no-tomorrow-band-9 Our Philly House Shows column returns with a feature direct from The Farm in West Philly as Wilmington, NC's brutal practitioners of bottom-heavy d-beat punk, No Tomorrow recently unleashed a mean set supported by Plague Dogs, Repellers, and Alement. Like many classic West Philly basements, The Farm comes complete with makeshift bar with a steady stream of golden ambrosia for the 21-plusers, with just a enough floorspace for the eager masses to let loose. Always a major plus- Black Orchid Foods was on hand to deliver some radically healthy home-cooked food for a more than reasonable donation. Just another touch ...

Philly House Shows VII – Weekend Nachos

Weekend Nachos 2012 Tour - East CoastWe usually keep our Philly House Shows feature to once a month, but there are exceptions to every rule. And since we received more angry emails in the months we took off from Philly House Shows than any other time, we figured we could break you off something special in January. Chicago practitioners of sludge-induced grindcore, Weekend Nachos just kicked off a two week East Coast tour that found the band playing a packed West Philly house show last Friday. Weekend Nachos are no strangers to Blow The Scene. With the release of their latest LP Worthless on Relapse ...

Philly House Shows V

Thursday, August 4th, 2011
Philly House Shows is back with a special edition, double-feature for your viewing and listening pleasure. I made it out to two house shows over the weekend and shot 10 bands, including local, regional, and nationally touring acts. One of my favorite aspects of the Philly Scene is that there is never a shortage of good house shows going down with bands from all over the globe. On Friday July 30, I hit The Cracker Factory house in Philly's Northern Liberties for a marathon show that showcased bands on several different tours and Cleveland hometown heroes TV Crimes and Dead Words, who were joined by Ohio's Light Years, as they were essentially stranded in Philly due to some ...

Wednesday, June 1st, 2011
Here is the second half of our special edition, double-feature, of notorious column Philly House Shows! We bring you vol 2 of The Blast Beat Be-Header grindcore showcases by local promoter Logan Neubauer. If you missed vol. 1 at International Waters in West Philly, check it out. Vol. 2 was indeed the last show to be held at one of South Philly's favorite basement venues, The Bordello and god damn was it a fitting farewell. Mr. Neubauer's band, a brutal 2-piece grindcore outfit, Backslider kicked things off. Unfortunately we were running on punk-rock-time and showed up about 20 minutes late and rolled in just as they were wrapping up. No worries because we will ...

Here is the first half of a very special addition of Blow The Scene's Philly House Shows! Blast Beat Be-Header vol. 1 was hosted at one of our favorite West Philadelphia show houses, International Waters, by none other than local promoter Logan Neubauer, who managed to draw a decent size crowd for a Monday night thrash-off. We'll be sitting down with Logan soon for a local spotlight interview, so keep an eye for that! Philly House Shows pt IV vol. 1 features Gash, ...

Unholy Trinity House – Philly House Shows III

Wednesday, April 20th, 2011
Cop Problem - Unholy Trinity House Show FlyerOur third installment of Philly House Shows takes us to west Philly and into the basement of the Unholy Trinity House. On Sat. April 16th I ventured out into the monsoon to photograph Casket, Life Less, and Cop Problem as part of Cop Problems Demo Release tour. My journalistic integrity forces me to mention that the drummer for Cop Problem is, in fact, BTS editor in chief Joshua. I arrived a few minutes before 6:00 to get a lay of the land and acclimate myself to the surroundings. Turns out that the flyer which said 6 was in ...

When these fine folks aren't whippin' up some tasty tofu scramble, they use use their shop as venue ...
