For what was unquestionably the hottest show of the year thus far, CA’s Loma Prieta ripped through Wolf Cycles in West Philly for a sweat soaked endurance test with Fucking Invisible, Full Of Hell, and Philly’s own Dying. We made it in just as Dying was wrapping up, but you can read more on these Philly hardcore purveyors with our recent song premiere and photo coverage.
Featuring members of Dropdead and Daughters, RI’s Fucking Invisible wasted no time bludgeoning the audience with a barrage of raw hardcore punk. The boys have a blistering new E.P. out now on Atomic Action Records entitled, Downtown Is Dead. Simply put- One of the best releases of 2013. Raw, sincere, and blazing from front to back.
Next up was Full Of Hell, whose effect-laden vocal setup was simply too much for the PA in the unrelenting heat and humidity. “What’s that smell dude?” quickly turned into, “Oh, fuck the speaker is on fire,” so I quickly ran the smoking speaker out of the room, and the show proceeded with one speaker. Par for the course, Full of Hell put in a steamer with just a little extra draw on the sludge parts this evening- And who could blame them? The heat was fucking intense. The sludge ripped hard, while the d-beat and blast moments sparked instant crowd reaction. FOH is supporting their latest on A389 Recordings, Rudiments Of Mutilation, that is another must hear of 2013.
Last and certainly not least, Loma Prieta took the floor and proceeded to tear into a manic set with their trademark blend of emotional hardcore. Blast-paced, discordant melodies on top of razor sharp fills and throat burning screams- Loma Prieta have carved a niche of hardcore that is all their own. The band’s latest full-length on Deathwish Inc, IV, has seen well-deserved praise from leading underground publications and fans alike. While their talent befits the larger venues we’ve caught up with them in over the years, there’s nothing quite like catching Loma Prieta in a small room where instruments rattle your bones and the sweat burns your eyes.
