After taking the internet by storm with the surprise Christmas Eve digital release of Run The Jewels 3, rap super-duo Run The Jewels have released the physical edition of the album in the US on January 13th, with copies landing in stores worldwide yesterday (January 20th). In keeping with their fiercely independent spirit, this album marks the group’s first time releasing music without a record label behind them, and is a proudly DIY effort.
In conjunction with the long awaited physical release of Run The Jewels 3, the duo is unveiling its latest adventure in cutting-edge expression, ARTJ. An Augmented Reality-based platform uniting RTJ’s passion for art & technology with their desire to reach fans in new and compelling ways, ARTJ will support and augment the global creative marketing campaign for the new album. Art from the duo’s vinyl, CD, posters, stickers, even t-shirts and digital images, have all been enabled for AR, and unlock customized RTJ content on the user’s phone when pointed at the image. Featuring original content from RTJ visual allies Tim Saccenti, Hector Arias, & Nick Gazin (with more artists TBA), and developed by mobile app company Experture, this marks the first phase of the wider ARTJ marketing activations that Team RTJ are rolling out throughout the year, with content updated and new images released regularly. Fans and curiosity seekers can download the ARTJ app from App Store here, and watch an awesome demo of ARTJ below:
ARTJ was initially teased by RTJ’s El-P on the duo’s acclaimed Beats 1 radio show WRTJ, whose second season debuted last Friday. The show returns today, and every Friday, at 5pm EST (with encore broadcasts Saturdays at 11pm PST). Hear El-P talk more about ARTJ here.
