August 28th at Philly’s Kung Fu Necktie venue will surely go down as one of the the raddest, gnarliest, and bloodiest shows of 2013 as seminal punk outfit Poison Idea tore through with Eat The Turnbuckle, Occultist, The Repellers, The Brood, and Dick Move in tow. And with that said, this exclusive gallery is definitely not for the faint of heart and be advised kids- Do not attempt to perform or recreate the events photographed below in any manner. The boys of Eat The Turnbuckle combine wrestling themes with Ex members of Bad Luck 13 Riot Extravaganza. Need we say more?
For those just tuning in, Poison Idea started in on a series of re-issues via Southern Lord Recordings in 2012. In cooperation with the band and TKO Records, Southern Lord released the CD version of The Fatal Erection Years. This compilation collects the Pick Your King 7”, Record Collectors Are Pretentious Assholes LP, and 4 compilation tracks from the era. Exclusive to this CD version, is the entire live set from the band at their best in Portland circa 1983. Live at the Met features 19 live, raw punk blasts and effectively brings this essential archival document to a raucous, destructive end. The audio was remastered and restored by Jack Control (World Burns to Death, Severed Head of State), and the poster/booklet contains liner notes from Poison Idea vocalist Jerry A, and tons of photos, flyers and more from the band’s early days.
Truly not a weak cog on this bill. Dick Move set the night in motion with a hearty metallic hardcore blend only to followed by Richmond’s Occultist, who burnt the place down with their patented blend of metal-infused punk that is deliciously raw and unhinged. The Repellers and The Brood held down the punk rock section of this rogues gallery before Eat The Turnbuckle let loose the mayhem. It was tornado of wrestling antics, broken glass, real blood, beer, chairs, tables, and anything else that wasn’t bolted down or standing clear became part of the show. Featuring ex-members of Bad Luck 13 and Javelina, Eat The Turnbuckle unleash a live show that is already becoming legendary.
Portland legends, Poison Idea hit the stage after midnight following a pit-crew-esque sanitation spray down from the ruble that was left by Eat The Turnbuckle. PI ripped into a blistering set before a packed house that stayed well past 1 am. Philly fans did these boys proud and paid proper homage to one of punk music’s most seminal figures to remain standing since the 80s.
