Today we continue a column here at BTS that we are all really stoked on, Philly House Shows. We introduced this column last month with Philly House Shows pt I – The Shore House, where we had the pleasure of photographing Metal Jacket, Common Alliance, Population Zero, and Fatal at West Philly’s staple punk basement.
On March 11th, James and I left the warm confines of South Philly and headed northwest to a new vegan eatery/cafe named Nick’s Vegan. When these fine folks aren’t whippin’ up some tasty tofu scramble, they use use their shop as venue for local and touring bands. This March 11th show featured Callous, Backslider, Deep Sleep, Magrudergrind, Cough, and Thulsa Doom (reunion tour!). This week we are bending the rules. And although this was not a house show, it might as well have been. Overall, the show was rad. We arrived about an hour into the show as Backslider was wrapping up. We started shooting as Magrudergrind took the floor. The show was absolutely jam-packed, over-capacity, and even for this basement show veteran of 15+ years, it has been a hot minute since I’ve felt a crush of bodies so tightly squeezed together. You could taste the sweat. Energy was off-the-chain. The only aspect of the show I could complain about was the set-up and the PA dying early in the night. The only available entrance was directly next to where the bands were performing, so if you arrived late or in between bands, you were stuck in the hallway or walking into the bands. With this being a new venue of sorts, I’m sure they’ll work out the kinks. And be sure to zip over to Nick’s during regular business hours to enjoy some healthy vegan treats!
Without further ado, here is the show in pictures; (All Photos by James Seibert)
