Blood Into Wine
Documentary Featuring Maynard James Keenan and Eric Glomski
Coming Sept. 7 on DVD Accompanying Soundtrack (Sound Into Blood and Wine) Available Same Day
It’s kind of a given that a good chunk of the people in the world like to drink alcohol. It’s a fair assumption to say a large part of the world enjoys the music of Maynard James Keenan in some capacity, whether through Tool, A Perfect Circle, Puscifer, or his cameos on various recordings by bands such as Rage Against the Machine. What most people might not know is that he’s a wine aficionado.
Blood Into Wine is the award-winning documentary that chronicles Maynard and winemaking partner Eric Glomski’s foray into making something quite literally out of nothing. From the trailer, Maynard muses, “No one in their right mind would plant a vineyard that’s less than six acres, because financially, it’s just as easy to farm 100 acres as it is to farm 10 acres. So to farm a half acre, is just silly.”
The documentary is not only a glimpse into the dream of Maynard and Glomski, as well as guests such as Patton Oswalt, Bob Odenkirk, Tim Heidicker and Eric Wareheim (of Tim & Eric Awesome Show Great Job!), and Milla Jovovich. But instead, it’s an all-encompassing step into the life of Maynard, who is quite a recluse and usually avoids interviews and the public limelight.
Along with the documentary comes the soundtrack, which features Puscifer’s music with guest stars like Milla Jovovich and Brian “Lustmord” Williams. These are the so-called “countrified” versions of the songs you might’ve heard on V is for Vagina and the C is for (Please Insert Sophomoric Genitalia Reference HERE) EP. The tracklisting is below at the end of this piece. It’s an essential pickup if you are a fan of the Puscifer releases and want to hear new versions of the previous songs.
The film premiered in February of this year, but is finally making its way to DVD on September 7th. Along with the DVD is the soundtrack, dubbed Sound Into Blood Into Wine. The DVD is available for preorder at www.bloodintowine.com and the OST is available at www.puscifer.com
If you’re a remote fan of the bands Maynard has been in, or if you have a passing interest in documentaries or wine, you should do yourself and pick up this documentary when it drops in a few days. Particularly, it’s amazing how the story goes from the beginnings of barren Arizona desert into a proper vineyard for Maynard & Glomski’s first bottle of “Judith” Cabernet Sauvignon. As they say in the teaser, “Let the grapes speak for themselves.”
