On Tuesday July 19, 2011, Big Business, Torche, and Helms Alee treated Philadelphia fans to a spectacular show at the notorious First Unitarian Church. Last fall, we reviewed Torche’s EP Songs For Singles and were quite taken as this group continues to pulverize fans with a patented blend of sludge pop. Hosts, R5 described Big Business and Helms Alee by saying, Big Business is a stoner rock / sludge band formed in 2004. and currently signed to Hydra Head Records, composed of Jared Warren of Karp, The Whip and Tight Bros From Way Back When, Coady Willis of The Murder City Devils and Dead Low Tide, and, as of early 2008, Toshi Kasai. For anyone unfamiliar with Helms Alee’s sound, it is a bit tricky to categorize or simply file into a specific slot. With the band hailing from the Northwest, gritty grunge acts from the area such as the Melvins or early Nirvana can be detected within, and Helms can even be compared to the Pixies.
Dante Torrieri was on hand once again to capture a rad gallery of amazing photos. Without further ado, here is the show in pictures:
