Secret Colours – In The Absence – Free Digital Download
By Andy McNeil, Assistant Editor
Chicago psychedelic rockers Secret Colours have been amping up their holiday spirits and giving away presents to their fans. The band is currently passing around a digital joint called In The Absence for free.
The digital download features of pair of songs that carry the band’s signature 60s-inspired garage sound. The title track wanders down a hazy path with a sitar-like guitar riff that saunters back and forth throughout the song. The drums and vocals are appropriately minimalistic – gliding along over the song in a shoegaze shuffle. The other song on the single, “Carry My Soul,” is an acoustic kumbaya-style spiritual number with echoing vocals and a soft melody.
Earlier this year, the band offered up a cover of The Beatles‘ experimental classic “Tomorrow Never Knows,” which is the last track on their 1966 album Revolver. Secret Colours does an admirable job recreating the song with effects-happy guitars and crashing cymbals. This track is still available for free on their Bandcamp page.
The group’s full length, a trippy self-titled effort that was released in August, is also available for purchase at many of your favorite outlets for music consumerism (it’s not hard to find, folks). Sorry hippies – unlike the digital singles – the LP is not free. Secret Colours knows that you’ve got to give a little to get a little.
