Red Fang, Black Tusk, and special guests Lord Dying recently tore through Philly’s Underground Arts venue for what proved to be one of the best metal shows of the year. Having relentlessly toured throughout North America and Europe, both Red Fang and Black Tusk have created a present groundswell of buzz with current albums available through Relapse Records. Lord Dying are fresh out of Red Fang‘s home turf of Portland, OR with their healthy blend of black metal and sludge that quickly won over a diverse Philly crowd. Per usual, Blow The Scene was on hand to capture exclusive photo galleries, show review, and video interview with guitarist / vocalist Bryan of Red Fang, which can be seen in the YouTube player below.
Lord Dying set the evening into motion with an impassioned set that saw riffs flying across various landscapes of niche metal. The doom was thick and sludgy, while the metal remained fast and ripping. The energy from the stage transcended throughout the packed venue and found Lord Dying commanding the stage like a headlining act. This is a band poised to become a household name throughout metal circles in the months to come. You can stream Lord Dying‘s latest 7″ in the Bandcamp player below.
This show marked the second occasion in recent months we’ve had the pleasure of catching Savannah’s Black Tusk– And goddamn, we were taken aback. Easily the best performance we’ve ever seen from the Tusk crew who proceeded to to decimate the standing-room only audience with their patented blend of driving southern metal and booming sludge that saw no lulls. Black Tusk continue to support a new full-length on Relapse Records, Set The Dial, which Stereogum.com commented on by stating, “Add Black Tusk to an ever-lengthening list of bands who figured out how to go from good to great.”
The brisk Philadelphia evening did not put a damper on the energy or the mood as Black Tusk passed the mic off to headliners, Red Fang who shook the remaining foundation to rumble with an unrelenting barrage of metal goodness. One of the few bands in metal that is not afraid to smile or have laughs with the crowd as they thunder out abusive tunes that have gained traction amidst varying demographics of music fans over the last year. Just as comfortable with the young bloods as with the old heads, Red Fang has been on upwards trajectory since the release of 2011’s Murder The Mountains on Relapse. The band cracked the Billboard’s Top 25 Heatseekers hart and has subsequently toured with the likes of Mastodon, Dillinger Escape Plan, and countless other metal mainstays. We caught up with Red Fang guitarist/vocalist Bryan Giles at Underground Arts for an exclusive video interview discussing the band’s current tour, forthcoming material, and highlights from recent European travels, that can be viewed in the YouTube player below.
