Philly metal mainstays, A Life Once Lost, continued a month-long takeover of the Kung Fu Necktie venue with a third Monday night installment featuring guest performances by Spirit Animal and Jucifer, as ALOL continues to test the waters with new material from a forthcoming release on Season Of Mist Recordings.
Local two-piece noise rockers, Spirit Animal, opened up the evening with a driving performance full of piercing distortions and dark melodies. The duo has recently shifted gears from three-piece status after parting ways with the bass guitar. The drum and guitar combo was fierce with added thickness represented through the use of octave pedals and thundering effects. Spirit Animal drew bodies to the floor quickly and sparked an upbeat mood to open the show.
The second two-piece outfit of the evening, Jucifer, swaggered into the venue as the band continues its perpetual nomadic tour life, finding their way to Philadelphia once again. With a truncated version of the patented wall of amplification behind guitarist Gazelle Amber Valentine, the duo erupted into riff, causing an avalanche of sound to tear through the venue. With varying movements of sludge induced metal, Jucifer just bludgeoned the audience with gargantuan riffs that put smiles on the faces of the onlookers who stood close enough to be visibly shaken by the sonic vibrations emanating from the speakers. Jucifer remains a live act to felt and heard.
A Life Once Lost have continued to hone brand new song offerings, seeing a swarm of loyal fans salivating to hear the final recorded versions hit streets via Season Of Mist later this year. With 3 of 5 Kung Fu Necktie appearances already chalked up for the month of July, it will be interesting to see how this residency concludes in the coming weeks.
