São Paulo, Brazil’s infectious pop rockers CSS treated Philly fans to a visceral performance that was as pleasurable to the eyes, as it was eargasimic last Friday at Union Transfer. CSS is currently touring in support of their latest full-length studio album, La Liberación, this past August and produced by band member Adriano Cintra. The album features guest appearance by Primal Scream‘s Bobby Gillespie and continues the band’s unique bi-lingual approach in both Portuguese and English with an amalgamation of pop anthems that translated into a raucous Philly performance.
The evening’s mix of artists was rather eclectic, but fans seems to keep up with every set transition, absorbing the show in what flowed like movements. Nice change to many bills that see a grouping of similar sounding bands. South Dakota’s EMA is supporting the tour with her unique bland of droney anthems where you’ll find everything from organ tones to stream-of-conscious lyricism. EMA aka Erika M. Anderson, received a large amount of critical attention with her former project Gowns, which combined elements of folk and drone.
The bill was rounded out by Brooklyn-based band and art/performance collective known as MEN, that focuses on the energy of live performance and radical potential of dance music. Apart from putting on an incredible live show, the band also focuses on may social issues, including wartime economies, sexual compromise, and demanding liberties through lyrical content.
