Straightedge, and specifically Youth Crew style hardcore has seen a definite surge in popularity and enthusiasm over the last year on the East Coast and Wilkes-Barre’s premiere hardcore venue, Redwood Art Space was testament to this as Disengage, Mindset, Praise, Peace, and Perspective ripped through last Friday.
Disengage, who feature several members of renowned area band Title Fight, headlined the event in support of their recent debut LP on Back To Back and Triple B Records, entitled Expressions. The LP was released at the tail end of 2011 to a solid base of enthusiastic supporters. With twelve songs clocking in under fifteen minutes, Expressions is a must for fans of Youth Crew style hardcore. Even though the album is fresh to the streets, many fans and friends showed up knowing every line and did not hold back to sing along enthusiastically throughout the evening with heavy mosh and pile-ons.
Maryland’s own hardcore titans, Mindset co-headlined the bill. Known for their explosive live sets, the band leaves a trail of destruction wherever they perform. With several well-received releases currently available at React Records, fans were recently treated to special reprinting of their FREE STATE no.1 release specifically for last weekend’s tour. Fans once again found the band in stellar form with a performance that evoked an epic response from Wilkes-Barre’s tight-knit hardcore community, along with fans that traveled several hours to catch this performance.
The bill was rounded out by two other premiere acts on React Records with both Peace and Praise putting in two performances that no one could sneeze at. Opening set by was provided by newcomers Perspective, who feature members of United Youth. Peace are currently supporting their latest release, a self-titled EP on React Records, featuring five new songs that are garnering a lot of buzz on the East Coast from fans a fellow bands alike.
