When this group of lucha libre mask wearing, surf-tinged, instrumental guitarists, known as Los Straitjackets formed in the late 80s, it’s unlikely anyone could have predicted the band would amass a cult-like following around the world, go on to become a staple of X-mas Season late night television with Conan O’Brien, receive a Grammy Nomination, and hold down 11 full-length releases.
The joke is on those who dismissed this band as just a flash-in-the-pan gimmick, as was evident by a recent showcase at World Café Live in Philadelphia. The band laid down an immaculate performance to the satisfaction of loyal fans who had quite a hoot over these charismatic characters who delivered a great mix of surf-rock and intricate string-stylings that have become their trademark sound.
Los Straitjackets are hard not to enjoy for any fans of music, no matter what genre gets your whistle the wettest. You have to tip your hat to band that has coasted through 25 years without compromising artistic integrity and still has an infectiously good time on stage.
Los Straitjackets have a forthcoming album, Jet Set, slated for a late Summer release on Yep Roc Records. Check out new video for song “Space Mosquito,” in Youtube player below!
