The Life and Times, Quiet Arcs, Carved Up Gallery

Rising space rock practitioners, The Life and Times, cruised through Philadelphia’s Kung Fu Necktie venue during a recent US tour run in support of their latest full-length No One Loves You Like I Do, which was released earlier this year via SlimStyle Records. For those of you just tuning into this intriguing three-piece outfit, The Life and Times have been honing their catchy atmospheric rock stylings since their formation in 2000 and touring with such mainstays as Murder By Death, Pelican, Mono, Sparta, and Pinback, to name just a few. Presenting an amalgamation of effect-laden sounds, The Life and Times are able to envelope audiences with a vast, constantly evolving patchwork of interwoven melodies, beats, and vocal hooks. Such was the case on this brisk Philadelphia evening that found scores of concertgoers tuned into this space station of rock ‘n’ roll.

Local favorites Quiet Arcs and Carved Up rounded out the bill for what turned out to be a solid three-band package. Carved Up are currently supporting their most recent recorded effort, Brothers, which was released in December of 2011 and marks the band’s transition from a solely instrumental outfit into a vocal-laden rock machine with the addition of vocalist James Gross. Carved Up offer an intriguing mix of post-hardcore, space rock, and heavy rock ‘n’ roll, as the band’s string section consisting of Nick Norvilas and TJ Schilling, rotate instruments intermittently from bass to guitar and vice verca as the set progresses.

Quiet Arcs is an ensemble we’ve followed for some time now, as the band has garnered a substantial following in the Philadelphia area with their own unique spin on modern rock, dipping into an influence pool that ranges from Melvins to Black Sabbath. Always full of quirky stage commentary to offset their driving and often dark rock sounds, Quiet Arcs provide free music for fans and friends and continue to adhere firmly to their DIY ethics.
