The shapeshifters in Brooklyn’s Pyrrhon are launching a US tour today with the equally uninhibited & unorthodox Nashville trio, Yautja, for what promises to be one of the top live showcases to close out the 2017 touring season.
Pyrrhon continue to support a latest full-length effort, What Passes For Survival, lauded by critics and fans while sparking a buzz that will undoubtedly see this album ranked amongst the top practitioners of 2017.
Loosely written over the period of a year, and refined across six weeks of touring, What Passes For Survival is Pyrrhon‘s first recording featuring drummer Steve Schwegler. It integrates elements of disorienting free improvisation while maintaining a proper foothold in volatile, ferocious death metal. All 4 members contributed at least one song on the album, which was recorded live at Thousand Caves studio with engineer Collin Marston (Gorguts, Krallice) in its rawest possible form, using no click tracks or sound replacement. WPFS is available through Willowtip (US) & Throatruinner Records (Europe).
Yautja resumes a musical campaign that has proudly landed them at the forefront of a niche within heavy music that the band members continue to define as they go. Yautja‘s approach to songwriting is one to be commended. The riffs exist within the cracks and crevices of conventional playing, presenting an angular soundscape that is smart and challenging. The members’ ability to present this haunting angularity within a pulse that remains accessible cannot be overstated enough. Simply put- The members of Yautja are musicians’ musicians. Walls of layered distortions that grow and flex over a cacophony of drum and bass work that is both intense and a blast of fresh air. Never ones to churn out hurried material, the trio has been slowly cultivating the anticipated follow-up to 2015’s Songs of Lament and teaser split 7″ with Fórn.
Newly remastered and repackaged vinyl EP, Dead Soil is coming November 10th on Anti-Corporate Music.
Tour kicks off tonight at Philly’s KFN venue with support by Backslider & Congenital Death. The full list of dates below.
