Erica Shultz of Yowie.com Q&A with BTS

Last month we started to notice bands Comadre and Daytrader taking part in live, interactive, web shows on a new site called Yowie.com. We zipped over to check things out and hooked up with Erica Shultz of the Yowie team. Erica recently sat down with Blow The Scene Editor Joshua Cohen for the skinny on what’s cooking at Yowie.com!

Joshua BTS: Greetings! Thank you for taking the time to answer a few questions for Blow The Scene readers around the world! Let’s begin by having you introduce yourself, and tell, what is Yowie?

Hi BTS readers! My name is Erica Shultz and I’m an Associate Producer/cyborg at Yowie.com. Yowie is an interactive group video chat website where users from around the world can talk to their favorite people via webcam.

Joshua BTS: What software will users need to have installed on their PC or Mac to take part on the website?

Erica (Yowie.com): There is no special software needed to use Yowie. All you need is a webcam, headphones, a decent internet connection and party pants.

Joshua BTS: Where did the idea for Yowie come from?

Erica (Yowie.com): A group of ex-myspace and imeem guys wanted to start a site to connect fans with their favorite bands and comedians. Thus, Yowie was born.

Joshua BTS: Apart from musicians, who can benefit from Yowie?

Erica (Yowie.com): Any common interest group looking for a platform to connect could benefit from Yowie. I mostly work with bands and comedians (my main interests), but I’ve also seen some awesome friend chats, a couple pro athlete chats and hopefully we’ll start a literary series in the coming months. I’m really excited about our growing comedy content featuring some of my favorite comedians like Nick Kroll, Matt Besser, Paul Scheer and Rob Huebel.

Joshua BTS: Apart from actual video conferences, what else does Yowie offer users?

Erica (Yowie.com): People can share multimedia files such as youtube, vimeo and soundcloud with a large audience and text chat with friends in a live chat window.

Comadre Appearance on YowieJoshua BTS: You recently featured one of our favorite bands, Comadre on Jan 13, with Daytrader and Another Breath scheduled in the next couple of weeks. How did you decide what bands to feature in the infant stages of your Website?

Erica (Yowie.com): I feature bands that I like. I’ve met a lot of bands through touring with Broadway Calls and hosting a college radio show. Once I picked up momentum, Barrie Cohn from Generic Insight Radio saw the potential and started her own chats as a video supplement to her radio show. I recognized Barrie from Broadway Calls shows so we naturally teamed up. She has great taste in music and I’m so happy to have her on board. It also helps to have a supportive boss who loves Joy Division and The Smiths.

Joshua BTS: Where can fans find listings of all the shows that have happened via Yowie?

Erica (Yowie.com):For all upcoming and archived music shows, people can check out yowie.com/music. For comedy and pop-culture, check out yowie.com/pop. Additionally, all of our past shows are featured at the bottom of our homepage.

Joshua BTS: What are the overall goals of Yowie? I.E. where would you like to see the Website this time next year?

Erica (Yowie.com):I’d like to see a full line-up of regular programming, have more and more people connect with their friends, and get bloggers and music/comedy enthusiasts to host their own shows…cough BTS Yowie series cough. My personal goals for the year include getting Janeane Garofalo, Ian Mackaye, Patton Oswalt, David Cross, The Weakerthans and Propagandhi on Yowie. Wish me luck!

Joshua BTS: What should users expect from Yowie in the coming days, weeks, months?

Erica (Yowie.com):Better tools to chat one-on-one or in small groups with your friends, ways of broadcasting to Apple devices, flexible embeds for blogs, webpages, and facebook, better t-shirts and stickers, and more awesome bands and comedians!

Joshua BTS: Thank you for taking a moment with BTS today! We wish you the best of luck with Yowie.com and look forward to following-up with your future endeavors as the site grows. Any final thoughts or shoutouts?

Erica (Yowie.com): Thanks for your support! Shoutouts to Broadway Calls, Comadre, The Menzingers, The Flatliners, Shai Hulud, Shook Ones, Killing The Dream, No Sleep Records, All Teeth, Nor Cal Hardcore, Generic Insight, The Saddest Landscape, My Heart to Joy, Attica! Attica!, Make Do And Mend, Bridge 9, Panic Records, Jen Dodaro and everyone who has participated in Yowie chat funtimes.
